Worm, by Wildbow – A book review

If you know me, you have probably heard me rave about a fantasy book of epic proportions called Worm. I began reading the book on February 28 and finished the book just a couple of days ago. Finishing the book was like the end of an era for me. I am not exaggerating when I say I wept when I read the last page of the book. I read the last page a couple of times before closing the Kindle shut. I must therefore jot down everything I felt about this book before I move on and maybe find my next favourite book, though I think it is hard to beat Worm.

Worm is set in a world where people with superpowers are common. Our protagonist is a teenage girl with the power to control insects. Yes, insects. She takes down super-villains with super-strength, bodies of metal, the power to stop time and any other badass power you can think of, with bugs. Spiderman might want to refer to Taylor Hebert’s book of bug tricks for his next fight.

Taylor is a victim of bullying at school. Her school struggles shape her as a person and a parahuman (human with superpowers). With her power to control insects she decides to become a hero. A hero who will clear the rot from her city – Brockton Bay. One thing leads to another and she is mistaken to be a villain.

What follows next is the story of one girl who wants to do good but always ends up making choices which are generally not associated with heroes.

Wildbow (the author) beautifully tells us the story of a girl who wants to be better than those who bullied her. She wants to be a hero but her methods are unconventional. But what matters more – that she is the one to save the day or that her methods are villainous?

Worm is a webserial that was written over a period of two years. And that explains the length of the book – 5,708 pages. It is a huge investment but not one I regret.

If you thought Avengers was awesome, you need to read Worm. If you thought the moral dilemmas of Cap’n and Stark made for a great movie, you should read Worm. The fight sequences in Worm are mind-boggling. How do you use the power of someone who can manipulate time with the power of controlling bugs to beat a monstrosity that is threatening to wipe out an entire city? Intrigued?

Go read Worm now.
